Where the Secretary of State is satisfied that a maintained school had selective admission arrangements at the beginning of the 1997-98 school year, he may by order designate the school as a grammar school (section 104, School Standards and Framework Act 1998). This means that Grammar Schools are a special type of maintained school. There are 164 state-funded fully selective schools in England, currently more than 110 of these appear on WhatDoTheyKnow.
