The Local Government Act 1972 created district councils in England. It provided names for the metropolitan districts, but non-metropolitan districts were to be named by statutory instrument.
The following list of extant district councils is very incomplete:
- Cheshire East Council (unitary; created by SI 2008/634)
- Cheshire West and Chester Council (unitary; created by SI 2008/634)
