* '''24/09/2010''' - The Telegraph has obtained a list of [http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/politics/8021780/Quango-cuts-full-list-of-bodies-under-review.html 177 quangos up for abolition] - they are listed in full below.
* '''14/10/2010''' - [http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2010/101014-quangos.aspx Official list released] [http://download.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/ndpb/public-bodies-list.pdf here].
* Most of the bodies will be abolished under the {{ukpga|2011|24}}.
* [http://www.theyworkforyou.com/lords/?gid=2010-11-29a.1307.1 Lord Taylor of Holbeach has said]:
*:On freedom of information, I further reassure the House that where bodies already subject to the Freedom of Information Act are merged to form new arm's-length bodies that are established by and at least partly constituted by appointments made to government, steps will be taken to ensure that they fall within its scope. Where a body's functions are transferred to another body that is already subject to the Act, they will naturally be subject to that Act.
* Some bodies are being abolished by means other than the {{ukpga|2011|24}}.  The "route" column of the tables below indicates this:
** '''PBA''' – Order under the {{ukpga|2011|24}}
** '''EA''' – commencement of {{ukpga|2011|21}}
** '''HBOLA''' – commencement of {{ukpga|2004|25}}

* Official DECC statement [http://www.decc.gov.uk/default.aspx] - [NB: shown as a boxed text on home page rather than a press release]
:<small>'''Government review of public bodies – 14 October 10'''
:Today the Cabinet Office announced the outcome of the Government review of public bodies, setting out which bodies will be retained, merged or no longer be an NDPB. DECC is closing three bodies and retaining a further nine.  The majority of DECC’s public bodies are considered to have met one of the three tests set out to determine whether an arm’s length public body remains the right delivery mechanism, (performing a technical function, requiring political impartiality or needing to act independently to establish facts).  Three of DECC’s public bodies will no longer continue - the UK Chemical Weapons Convention National Authority Advisory Committee; Advisory Committee on Carbon Abatement Technologies; and Renewables Advisory Board.</small>

Latest revision as of 08:52, 24 June 2022

A number of non-departmental government bodies / quangos have been named as being up for abolition, merger or absorption into parent departments, as part of the Coalition Government's Spending Review, due this autumn. This has been widely dubbed in the press as a "bonfire of the quangos".

The list of quangos up for review is still being compiled, and there have been a number of clarifications, amendments and retractions as further details come to light.

As dates are confirmed and necessary legislation made, these should be copied into Current events.

  • Lord Taylor of Holbeach has said:
    On freedom of information, I further reassure the House that where bodies already subject to the Freedom of Information Act are merged to form new arm's-length bodies that are established by and at least partly constituted by appointments made to government, steps will be taken to ensure that they fall within its scope. Where a body's functions are transferred to another body that is already subject to the Act, they will naturally be subject to that Act.
