Northern Ireland departments are defined by section 21 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 to be those existing at the time that act came into force, with changes being made by Acts of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
The list of Northern Ireland departments in 1999 was stated by the Departments (Northern Ireland) Order 1999.
